I tend to agree. This could be GW's downfall from an RPG perspective, though I'm sure the PvP will continue to flourish. It seems a common request from the PvE community that the role-playing needs to be a richer experience. I'm definately in the PvE category, so WoW continues to interest me more and more.

I'm in no hurry - I'll wait and see what comes in Chapter II before jumping overboard.

My PC is in tip-top shape (drivers and firmware), i meet the sys req and still i get disconnected every 5 minutes, my character is not shown and have the "Unknown entity" problem.

I've been searching Blizzard tech supoort forums on what could cause this, changed my firewall settings, worked on my router, changed my NIC transfer to full-duplex since being at automatic was a sin punishable by WoW not working properly, etc... At least my character appears on screen but i still get disconnected and have the "Unknown entity" problem.

I've been at it for 2 hours before i had to leave for work.

Believe me I NEVER had so many problems with a game before.

For a game with a monhtly fee and a player base that huge i can't figure why the tech support forum is so crowded and the game so toutchy.

Then again, maybe i'm just unlucky.
Where can I find this 10 day trial?

I think that with the direction WoW's pvp is going the game probably wont be a contender with guildwars much longer. I mean only the top guilds can do real good because they get together and do like 40 man raids. That is pretty much the only way to get really good gear and stuff of the sort. in pvp skill has little with how long you survive. Only the guilds that have done pve religously to get good gear have any chance of survival in pvp areas. so depending on if you want pve or pvp this game might not be the best choice for you.

But it seems to me that WoW is just the opposite from GW in that regard. GW is a PvP game with a "tacked on" PvE mode, whereas WoW is a PvE game with a "tacked on" PvP mode. If you're playing WoW JUST to do PvP, I feel pretty sorry for you. I've only experienced WSG so far, but I'm pretty disappointed. Nothing but twinked out toons and total lack of coordination (at least on Alliance side). You ask your raid mates for a strategy and the typical response is either total silence or something like "stfu noob".

The PvE though is umatched. There's always something to do, a new profession to work on, another dungeon to raid, another piece of loot to get, etc. I have a fairly regular group for instancing, and we kick serious ass. We 4-manned the Scarlet Monestary last night with 3 sub-40 characters. Good times.

Prepare yourself for a huge download. The zipped file is 2.6 Gigs and once installed it's about 4.5 Gigs.

I finally got WoW to work after updating my router's firmware.

Got my Human Mage up to level 6 last night. My opinion has no real weight since i've only been playing for like 3 hours.

I think it has it's good and it's bad.

Nyax posted all of the good that i could think of. But if i may add, there ARE good drops in this game. But, since they are not assigned to you after the kill, you better run to get them before someone else does (if you solo that is. Must roll if in team).

You have different type of realms: PvP, RolePlaying (PvE) and Normal(PvE).
But, the wait lines to enter them are quite annoying. That's the price to pay for using a trial key, the paying customers get priority.

You can jump.

I do like the fact that there are so many armor parts and different armor skins and they DO change the appearance of your character when you equip them.

The interface is IMHO less polished than GW but must point out that it was launched way before GW.

Graphic wise i prefer those of GW, but thay are good in WoW. Just diffrent and it's easy to get used to.

There is a durability system like Diablo which in that case i'm neutral.

I've enjoyed it so far, but unfortunately, i don’t like the fact that i must pay a monthly fee afterwards. Maybe i'm oldschool, but i can't bring myself to pay for a game and pay some more every month to keep playing it.

Ok, it has lots of content and its way more immersive and deep than GW, but the fee....

10$ to 15$ a month may not sound that much, but i still have to pay for my car, gas, my house, my girlfriend (woops!)

AH ty sir, and yeah I always thought no way I can't spend 10-15 a month on a game, thats absurd.. but then I realized that if I just don't buy cigarettes for a week or 7-11 coffee, or hell if I don't go to applebees 4 times a week, I can fit it in

Meh, everytime I download the file.. it downloads in half a second and the zip file is empty ><

Any ideas?

Yeah i had to deactivate my firewall and use FilePlanet downloader.

Everything worked fine afterwards.

Also, you'll be asked for a credit card when you create your trial account.

From what i could find, it's just in the case you decide to continue playing after the trial period ended. If not your account will be deleted.

Not EXACTLY true. depending on how long you sleep and logout before replaying the character you may get from a tiny bit of the bar to 1-and-a-half levels of double experience.

Thanks Nyax, i'd like to but i'm more of a PvE type of player than PvP. Also the server is full. I'd probably wait in line for hours to connect since i get the lowest priority (trial account limitation).

My NightElf Druid is in Draka and my Human Mage and Human Warrior are in Kirin Tor (RP realm).

My friend from work is thinking about buying WOW since all I do at work is play it and I'm wondering excactly how much space it'll take up on a hard drive. I know it says 5 gigs on the box but it says 2 gigs on GW and mines only took up 1.

What follows is a series of double posts to build a bridge perhaps. I used facts and humor and no bashing. This is my take in this "great debate".

The more I see these types of comments and the sentiments behind them (ignorance), and the response mistress made about these people not having PLAYED the damn game, the less angry, and more amused I become as to the current state of gaming.

Gamers are cheapskates. Period.

We seem to have a cultural shift in gaming, with the advent of broadband access and warez and free mp3 players, free movies, and all that (don't deny it, piracy has infected the general mindset of a great many gamers). People want something for nothing, or something for one thing, and then be eternally gratified.

If you look at gw and wow side by side, and strip away all the hype (especially that which I have posted here and elsewhere), and you remove the emotional bullshit that surrounds people's lack of informed opinion on both sides of the debate, then a picture emerges that is quite fascinating.

What is the same between gw and wow:

Both have constant content updates
Both reward you for high end content attainment
Both have wondferully diverse and involved, living worlds
Both have a massive fan community and it isn't growing smaller (quite the opposing reality)
Both are fun to play and engage in
Both are beautifully rendered works of graphic genius
Both have something for all types of gamers
Both are packed to the gills with nooks, crannies, and little touches to make it more enjoyable
Both offer competitive and cooperative play
Both offer guilds and ranking systems for the fame obsessed
Both offer humor and cultural touches that make them shine apart from the mog industry as a whole
Both are brilliantly designed, in both art, sound and plot (mostly)

Both reward players for skill (im sorry, but in wow, being level 60 doesn't gaurantee shit, i've killed them on my level 45 warlock hundreds of times without dying)
Both have massive potential
(there are many more, but you aren't stupid, so I'll move on)

WOW: The Problems and Have Nots

WOW does NOT have a fast loading engine. My machine is top of the line, and can run anything I throw at it, usually even 2 copies of the same thing. WOW makes my machine cry blood-ravaged tears of anal torment.

WOW does not have good technical support. AT F***ING ALL. Their forums are literally pelted with "tough shit" responses from blizzard. Literally.

WOW does not have the ease of use and small learning curve of GW. GW, you pop it in, perhaps READ THE GOD DAMN MANUAL, and you're off. In wow, you need to have personally washed the bed linen of Tolkien and Blizzard execs to even grasp the sheer immensity of what lies before you. The moment you step outside, you realize how MASSIVE everything is, and when i myself first set foot into the Orc capital city of Ogrimmar, I was unable to speak for an hour. It's to SCALE of a city. It kinda intimidates people I think on some level.

WOW has THE single most complicated, over the top, and cluster-f***ed class quests you can possibly imagine. For my warrior for example, I was required to go literally ALL over the gameworld, and upon getting all those materials, just getting to them required I level up to face those battles, and then the weapon or armor I got was for 5 or 6 levels below my current one. But it took me weeks. This is insane. And the AMOUNT of mats needed for an item craft are mind bogglingly annoying. You want dragon scale shoes? fork over 90 of this or that including gold and travel time. It is MADNESS.

WOW does not let you dye your gear (yet). This has been an ongiong battle between pr reps at blizzard and us, the customers. We want it, they explain it would include MASSIVE graphical tweaks that would bring the game down deader than cold bologna. Every texture would have to be redrawn and remapped with every possible pixel shading, they say. Daunting? Well, look what they've done so far. If they cannot do it, who really can?

WOW does not have ease of travel. Oh yeah, your mage can open portals to faction towns, or the same for your party if they are 30+ in level, and warp, but WOW simply CANNOT compete with the ease of travel in GW. Sunk that battleship. You either walk for an hour or more (not kidding) or spend currency that would bankrupt the United States to purchase...a small animal to ride around on which you can be hit while riding but cannot hit BACK. Damned feature.

WOW has a dearth of yougner, vibrant players, at least on my server. I have found myself to be the youngest person in many parties and raids I partake in. I am 27 so that means I am listening to the claptrap of disgruntled managers and whatnot. It can be a letdown. Younger gamers bring excitement and randomization to encounters, and their exhuberance makes games more enjoyable for all. Old people just piss and moan about taxes in chat. LOL.

WOW does not have an end. Sorry but this has been brought up before and it needs to be seen from this side as well. You can get to 60 but it wont stop. If you ever want that pot-o-gold, you have to keep chasing that item raindbow. They always come out with "sumpin new" and leave you crying in the grass.

WOW has no socketed items like Diablo II did (yet). In the expansion, they are adding this, along with flying mounts, and other things, like raising the level cap to 70-75 (still up in the air at this point but still, it beats level 20 ranger/necromancer facing, you guessed it, a warrior/monk AGAIN.

WOW has too many god damn mats for crafting. Seriously. You could farm for 19 hours straight, and not find it all, nor realize how much there IS to find. That is akin to the daunting thing I mentioned before. There's...just...too...much...to do!

WOW doesn't run well in large situations of players converging on a general area. Many of us call Ironforge, the dwarven city, Ironlag. Orcs is Orgrilag. It fits. If you can take a shower before your character turns left, there's something wrong.

Guild Wars: The Problems And Have Nots
GW has sorrow's furnace now. GW is getting an assassin class. GW has green items and other little touches that make the world itself more vibrant and enticing to the fans and the newcomers. GW has a stable framework and decent latency concerns (for me at any rate). But GW does NOT look any different.

GW does not allow you to craft items. Oh yeah, you can wrap some cloth around a stick and have the same one every third player of your class has, but no, you cannot create a completely unique item through enchantments and rare patterns (by which you trained skills to master a craft, and thus feel accomplished when someone runs past you wearing shoulder pads and pants you spent hours farmin the mats to manufacture and then sell to afford your epic mount).

GW does not allow you to use in game mail. This has the lame gene on it.

GW does not allow you to remove the most IRRITATING aspects of socialization from your game environment, without making you leap flaming hoops to keep in touch with those people you need to. If you dont want to hear all the bullshit, you have to disable it, and not hear the good stuff.

GW armor is not broadly varied. GW armor sets make everyone wearing it look the exact same way, except for a grey here, a red there. I had seen only ONE person with every single piece a different color, and within a week, it was assimilated into the fad phase, just like chaos axes and max damage pants (joke).

GW does not give you ranking as in wow. You get faction, which caps out ridiculously low, and must be spent on the exact same pool of things everyone else has already. Yeah, unlockables, but, like the old playstation spiderman game, everyone got all the comic book covers, so its not that stupendous is it? World rankings are a different matter, as both games offer that in divergent methodologies.

GW is all or nothing regarding PVP. You enter an arena, you get teamed with pals or random, and the fight is on. In a way, this means you cannot actually ever pick your battles. You must deal with the team you are clusterf***ed into, and deal with the madness. Leaving mid-battle is the usual circumvention. In WOW, running like that gets you shanked in the ass, the murderer being cheered as a champion.

Gw has absolutely the most minimalist interface I have ever seen in a game of its scope and grandeur. In being easy to use, it's almost like a program for paralyzed people learning to navigate by tongue-kissing a pressure pad.

GW does not have an epic level rating. I'm sorry, but level 20 was supposed to mean, back when I bought the game on day 2 after it hit shelves, that you payed your dues in blood screaming and questing. It was supposed to mean you really made it. Your hard work and hours (they lied, anyone who made twenty within 2 weeks on their first character is lying out of their cakehole. I have since tried to blaze up there on various builds that previously worked. It CANNOT be done). So then, when I hit 20, I was thinking to myself...ok. Now what? I have the same armor as those 15 people, but mines purple. My sword has fire and their's has...health and fire both. I have a cesta for energy.

GW has a plot whole the size of Nebrasks that totally ruined the entire feel for me. I found out what I already knew about the plot of the creepy fu**er wanting the ceptor of orr (the manual practically TELLS you where all the undead come from, alongside their drops (symbols of orr, hello?) so it's only possible to spoil it for people who dont pay attention to details). So what? Undead again. Woot. Or something.

GW does not have a decent system in place for stopping party griefers. One can map out at will, becuase you offend them, or because they simply can and want to make you die and scream about it on gwg. This is nothing more than an enabler for idiots, asshats, and generally unhappy people who want to make everyone as miserable as they are get away with doing so. In wow, if you drop your party ruthlessly like that in a dungeon to solo for the good drops, you get kicked the hell back to town, the game practically slapping you upside the screen with a sassy comment of "BYE". If you leave a party elsewhere in battle, you'll die fast, as if you needed a party anyway, you're in bad places right? WOW punishes the bad boys. GW sorta chuckles and slaps a new content area online, and wash, rinse, repeat.

GW has some seriously demented naming conventions for guilds that it will allow some idiot to come up with. Not bad ideas, but inappropos items. WOW makes you use common sense and niceties.

GW makes you stick with shit. In WOW, you can unlearn and relearn professions as much as you want (within the limit of 2) and the secondaries, which are cooking, fishing, and first aid, are not limited.

GW does not have as many friendly players as WOW. I have had more positive interactions, per session with WOW, than ever in GW. In GW someone is always screaming, swearing, dancing naked, and generally being a penis. In wow, the community polices itself viciously, and ruthlessly. You bash jews in general chat, we rarely see you again The game also keeps track of all channel chatter, so you cannot deny what you say. ANET does this too, but for some pr reason, they refuse to admit it. Nothing a company posts onto active servers is unlogged. NOTHING. Internet undstrial rule of thumb. If you dont log it, someone can sue you later. You are entering data on their server when you type, they log it. Ask.

What GW Has That WOW Does Not

Neat capes
Dye for armor
Skill Prep (the 8 at once rule, which forces a person to play chess instead of bank robbers and cops)
Gwen
Speed (both load times and instances)
Real time feel to the combat
Truly beautiful models and art and graphics
Your choices affect you AND those near you more than in WOW in many cases
One playable race, making it culturally digestible to the socially challenged (this isnt a bad thing in my opinion.)
Easy to pick up (see line above)
Interesting and varied skillset for all classes and builds
Idiot Savants

Thats it.

What WOW Has That GW Does Not

Massive crafting potentials for players
Unrestricted motion (if you can survive by avoiding aggro or by your wits, you can get there, i know because I have personally seen every inch of wow's world, and still it keeps expanding)
Infinite party raid members
Easy on the eyes pastel colors
1000 guild member cap (thats a REAL army, to hell with the 8 on 8 or 12 on 12 stuff. Until you SEE such a thing, you cannot, in sane mind, pass judgement on that one.)
Mounts (soon flying ones)
Larger guild crest design pool to choose from
Expansion slots for your personal storage bank. If you have all the slots, and large bags, you can outfit an army!
TRUE random item drops
FREQUENT item drops of epic and uncommon stature.
Player auction house that truly is a cut above anything else in gaming today.
A point that goes beyond maxing out stats and killing your uncle thomas in a large arena. You can use that level 60 to uncover new plot points in the always-evolving warcraft universe, better your prower through high end gear, and generall help your fellow man with little detriment to yourself (it fosters kindness)
No 2 people look EXACTLY the same, ever
Raid groups are truly amazing. 500+ people fighting in real time in a small area makes you think back to Helms Deep in that LOTR film. It's like that. The chaos of war, all in real time, people flying around you, dying, rising, buffing, debuffing. The chaos is exquisitively Roman-esque.
When You Die, you don't lose "morale" (yeah i would think dying would make me upset but cmon, its insane)
Players can learn abilities that truly ARE epic in execution. Blast wave on an onrushing army is truly madness on an epic scale to see. Its bad to be in it LOL.
-------
In conclusion
-------

I play both of these games. I left and came back to both of these games. This tells me that both of these games truly are remarkable in their niche, and they are capable of pleasing the gamer who likes any style (even flight sims LOL). What WOW has and GW does not is, in the end, minor cosmetic and some titanic technical differences. At the end of the day, when I sit and think about all the times I have had in both, I realize that, despite all the drama on forums and chats, I had, and still have fun with them both. I'll even admit, equal measures of good times. Coming from me, that says something. I'm hard to please.

Gw taught me to think on my toes, and plan my moves accordingly. Wow taught me patience, and that success comes to those who invest time and thought into goals. Both games taught me something about humanity, and who I am as a person. That cannot be bought. That isn't free. That is gold.

This will be my final post in this thread regarding the "great debate". I give you my word of honor on that.

The one thing that GW has over WoW is it has a great community on WoW its just full of annoying 12 yr olds most of the time that think there the dogs balls because they have no life and can ataina level 60 in 3 weeks. i play both WoW and GW and i prefer GW just because the people on the game are ace yeah you can find some annoying RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GOs but then again you can on most games but overall the comunnity for guild wars rocks.

WoW has a hell of alot more things to do on it but you cant just casually play WoW you have to dedicate some time from everyday if you hope to achieve any level. I'm cuurrently leveling an Undead Rogue with 2 of my friends so as soon as we each hit 20 where off ganking aliance as the server where on has a stupid ratio of alliance to horde of 6:1 which i think is crap.

I was downloading WoW on my laptop because I bought my own copy now and in the middle of the process I exited out. Now when I open it it shows the login screen not the sign up process. So I don't know know what to do.
